Looking for the book. . . (sci-fi)?

The first half of the book describes the return of a ship to a planet called flora, and the main character receives some tulip seeds sent to her by her husband, who remained on the planet. Tulips grown appear to be sensitive and able to protect themselves when the wizard tries to crush them with a tractor. The second half takes place after the main character arrives at the plant and re-met her husband. The planet is populated by orchids and the orchid are able to mate with humans. What I remember this book is a science-fiction classic, but I could not find the title anywhere throughout my research. Any assistance would be appreciated.
